Required Functional Experience
Typically requires 3 years of experience in phlebotomy or related lab function.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Completion of required education and training on central line ports, complications and techniques, and demonstrated competency in performing central line accessing within six months of hire.Excellent communication (written and verbal) and listening skills.Ability to work in a fast paced environment and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.Excellent customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees.Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
Primary Purpose
Under nursing supervision, performs venipuncture, skin puncture and port access functions to obtain specimens from patients for laboratory analysis. Performs limited testing, specimen processing, manual ordering, and/or result entry. Functions as a liaison between the laboratory and patients and ensures compliance with all accrediting agency standards.
Major Responsibilities
Verifies patient identification to ensure patient safety and assesses patient reactions to specimen procurement.
Under nursing supervision, performs venipuncture, skin puncture and port access functions to obtain specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol, priority and scheduled draw times.
Obtains assistance from registered nurse when judged necessary, which includes problems with the port site, and/or inability to bleed or flush a Central Venous Access Device (CVAD).
Performs limited testing under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), 1988 guidelines. Orders and verifies test requests.
Receives, sorts, and procures specimens and ensures that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing. Resolves specimen identification and/or requisition problems and clarifies requests. Packages and tracks specimens for transport.
Processes specimens for testing, including aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and loading instruments, while maintaining proper specimen identification. Notifies providers of stat, critical and other abnormal results.
Runs quality control checks and monitors statistics related to port draws and port infection rates. Documents appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement according to established protocol.
Performs clerical functions which may include: answering telephone calls, patient registration, payment collection, data entry of demographic and insurance information, copying, faxing, laboratory result entry, generating and distributing reports, and/or ordering/delivering supplies and/or equipment.
Maintains current knowledge and skills necessary to insert and remove port access devices. Maintains current knowledge of and complies with the contents of all pertinent policy and procedure manuals.
