Internship - Shipping and Receiving - TAPCO Inc. - Brown Deer, WI



Nature of Work

In this role, you will support the receipt and shipment of goods. You will verify and maintain records on incoming and outgoing shipments and prepare items for shipment. This position will report to the Shipping/Receiving Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties listed below may vary in terms of importance and other duties may be added or eliminated as this position develops.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify information against bills of lading, invoices, orders, or other records

  • Uses computer to look up, verify, print out and/or enter data related to incoming and outgoing orders

  • Retrieves product from warehouse locations and assembles complete customer orders

  • Confirms or determines method of shipment, utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates

  • Assembles wooden or cardboard containers or selects pre-assembled containers and inserts items into containers, using spacers, fillers, and protective padding

  • Seals containers and binds containers with metal or plastic strapping, or packaging tape

  • Affixes shipping labels on packages or stencils identifying shipping information on cartons, using stenciling equipment

  • Attaches identifying information and shipping instructions onto crates or containers

  • Posts weights and shipping charges, and affixes postage

  • Unpacks and examines incoming shipments, follows established procedures to reject damaged items, records shortages, and corresponds with shipper and supervisor to rectify damages and shortages

  • Stocks items into proper locations

  • Examines outgoing shipments to ensure shipments meet specifications

  • Maintains inventory of shipping materials and supplies

  • Follows all safety rule and 5S / Lean Manufacturing procedures

    • Must be able to read, write, and interpret English instructions

    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables

    • Able to lift up to 70 Ibs

    • Computer skills – Basic knowledge and ability to look up and enter data

    Required Experience

    • High School diploma or equivalent

    • Minimum of 2 years experience in related position in a manufacturing company

    • Minimum of 2 years experience using a forklift

    • Experience using basic computer skills, such as looking up and entering data

    • Knowledge of using an Inventory Software System

    • Must be familiar with proper packaging methods and able to interpret visual aids used to convey specific packaging requirements

    Preferred Experience

    • Working in a 5S and/or Lean Manufacturing Environment

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is walking, lifting, carrying and pushing carts and also climbing in and out of the back of a truck the majority of an 8 hour day. The employee is required to stand, stoop, kneel, and climb. This position uses hands to handle objects, tools, or controls; and to reach with hands and arms. The employee must often lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. High level of concentration while checking documentation, products and counting. The employee is frequently required to talk and hear.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a busy material handling warehouse setting with several shipping docks in a variety of weather conditions including rain, snow and sleet. The position is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and risk of electric shock. The use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields, protective gloves and hearing protection may be required depending on the area of the warehouse. The use of steel toed shoes is required in the warehouse. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but become substantial at times. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; however, at times the workload may not require full time or may require overtime Monday through Saturday. Some flexibility of scheduling may be necessary in order to accommodate customer’s needs.
